Actually, I first heard of this from a small local book seller when I picked up one of Rutherford's gems. I had lamented that they were very difficult to find, and he proceeded to tell me that certain religious establishments would have agents out specifically looking for certain items to buy and DESTROY! I had never even thought such a thing was possible up to that point. Seems exactly so. More proof positive we are dealing with a CULT.

Balm In Gilead for WTS
by snowbird inin the 8th chapter of jeremiah vs 22, the rhetorical question was asked, "is there no balm in gilead, is there no physician there ...?".
i thought of that as i watched the news report of the convention in mobile, alabama.
the jw's met at the civic center which has a seating capacity of 10,000. sunday's peak attendance was around the 5k mark.

Snowbird:
Ain't that the truth! This religion bears no resemblance to the one my parents joined so many years ago. Different animal entirely. So true about the blank stares and the wasted snoozefest. I always think of that scripture - "how long will you keep eating what is not bread?" or something to that effect that they used to quote when they continuously vilified and lambasted the churches. My, how the tables have turned! 5k out of 10,000 seats. What a joke!

Could I get disfellowshipped for this?
by slimboyfat inooops i think i went and did it this time.

i didn't go to the meeting on sunday, and lazed about the house instead and listened to a bit of the meeting on the phone.

Egads! What a conundrum you now find yourself in. Honestly, you just can't make sh!t like this stuff up - LOL!
Geez, I just don't have one ounce of advice to give you - wish I did, but this is one hell of a knot you have tied yourself up in! I guess if it were me, I would just lie extremely low and hope the whole thing blows over. You've got to thank your lucky stars these were 'holiday Witnesses' (never actually heard of that myself but anyhow) if you ever get a follow-up visit by anyone else, feign ignorance and make like they've got the wrong house...mistakes like that can happen...you just don't recall ever having any conversation with anyone....etc.
Loved reading your story - thanks for sharing that - I know it can be tempting to let 'em have it with both barrels more or less but you'll just have to be more circumspect in the future!

Thanks so much for sharing this. This disease seems to be becoming increasingly prevalent - I now personally know 3 people battling and it is horrible ... at least a hopeful sign...

What are you doing to save money on groceries and gas?
by milligal ini'm looking for tips.
i usually shop at a commissary on a military post, the other day i went to a civillian store and found eggs for $3/dozen, milk $5/gallon and bread $3/loaf!
well even on post it's still expensive.

I'll second St. Ann's advice about The Tightwad Gazette! I read that book years ago and the hints and tips in there are really money-saving. Just one example is re-using your coffee grounds...
I know it sounds awful, but really you just add half the amount of ground coffee that you would normally put into the basket to the grounds that are already in there from the last pot (when you make your next pot), and you really can't taste the difference but your can of coffee goes that much further. Try it and see! I really should reread that book one of these days...thanks for the reminder, St. Ann!
Anyhow, if the gas keeps going up, I don't know what we'll do. We're already carpooling, reducing trips, checking the air in the tires, given up completely on meeting attendance (huge savings right there!) and our monthly gas bill is still higher...

A phone call from the elders.
by strawberry cake inmy husband and i left the org about 6 months ago and in voicing our views we were shunned.
the elders who were 'friends' treated us with cold efficiency to the letter of their law.
one older elder played 'good cop' and invited us over for a heart-to-heart.

Honesty:
That is a priceless nugget you have posted there. Definitely a keeper! How did you find that????
My, how the doctrine has taken a total 180 since then...this should be posted in every hall (surreptitiously of course!)

Bluegrass fading
by hobbitLore innot the actual bluegrass here in kentucky, just a family here that have decided to stop being part of jehovah's witnesses.. .
my wife and i were both raised in the organization and it is still a difficult journey for us.
her family is still active and that makes it tough for us to go quietly.

Welcome, Bluegrass fading!
Like you, our family more or less awoke all at the same time - we have been very fortunate in that regard. It is so good to hear that you and your wife are on the same page, and your children will not be subjected to this indoctrination. Some of our extended family is still in, but we have limited contact so all has gone well, so far.
Life just seems to get richer, once the mind numbing meetings are no longer part of the weekly grind. Very good to hear your story.

I am starting to much prefer the interiors of churches these days, especially the richly decorated ones that inspire reverence and exude splendour through art and decoration.
As far as KHs go, this looks better than my old one!

Jesus mentioned it so it MUST be true... ?
by LtCmd.Lore insomething i don't get... when discussing the accuracy of the flood myth, and the story of jonah, bible believers, dubs for example, will claim that it must be true because jesus mentioned it.. here's what i don't get: isn't it possible that jesus was simply refferencing a fictional event that everyone around him would be familiar with?.
i do it all the time!
with my family i will make reference to events in star trek, mash, or whatever as if they actually occurred.. like: "hey i just met someone at work, he was just like frank burns.".

I agree exactly with what you say. But, how do we even know that Jesus said exactly that? That is just the account - some unkown wrote down that Jesus supposedly said this - but about 40 to 50 years AFTER Jesus was ostensibly alive - the most telling thing is that Jesus never wrote anything himself, except one line in the sand and the only reason we know that is because someone else reported that, again, 40 or 50 years after the actual event.
SO first, it's a big IF that he even referenced it, and MOST LIKELY he is referring to an oft-referenced incident that was vivid in his listener's/audience's imagination - whether actually factual or not...
